Concrete Resurfacing

Series of pictures showing a spalled, chipped, and crumbling sidewalk being resurfaced one step at a time.

Chipped, cracked, and crumbling sidewalks.

Do you have a sidewalk or walkway that is chipping or crumbling?

Over time, the surface can being to crumble or chip away. The are a handful of reasons that this can happen: 1. Too much water in the concrete mixture when it was poured 2. Concrete that has frozen while setting up 3. Water being thrown on top of the slabs during the troweling process or an unfortunate rain storm while the concrete is setting up.

This causes the nice smooth finish of the concrete to flake off, leaving debris that can be tripped or slipped on.

Luckily, we have the solution!

our Concrete
Resurfacing Process

The key to long-term success of our concrete resurfacing system projects is proper preparation of the concrete and application of a durable and attractive resurfacing material.

Man diamond grinds chipped, spalled, crumbling sidewalk to as step 1 in the concrete resurfacing process.

Step 1: Diamond Grinding

This process provides a surface texture that the resurfacing base layer product can adhere to.

The first and most crucial step is preparation. Just like painting any wall inside your home, you repair damaged areas and use primer to prepare the wall to be painted properly.

The same is true for concrete resurfacing.

Our preparation includes mechanically diamond grinding the concrete to remove all prior repairs and/or coatings, then performing repairs with commercial grade repair materials.

NOTE:
DIY patches, patch mix, and other low-end repair materials fall off and any resurfacing materials that have been applied on top them will come off with it. This is why the complete removal of any existing materials is so important.

Step 2: Roll on Protocap® S

Typically applied at the end of the first day, after all repairs and grinding have been completed. Treatment of concrete with Protocap® S improves reliability and long term adhesion of all topical resurfacing materials designed to be used on concrete.

Protocap® S greatly reduces concrete wear from acid rain, by reducing the permeability of near surface concrete. Concrete wear rate is slowed, maintaining a newer look for a longer period of time. Epoxies, urethanes, paints, and other coatings benefit from prior treatment with Protocap® S.

Protocap® S is based on a colloidal silica formulation, so it does not introduce materials that are foreign to concrete chemistry and is one of the safest products on the market from a user and environmental friendliness standpoint.

Protocap® S is effective at preventing damage to concrete from de-icing chemicals and freeze-thaw cycles, and is an excellent pre-treatment for any concrete coating.

Man trowels base layer as step 2 in the concrete resurfacing process.

Step 3: Base Epoxy Layer

This base layer is a two-part aliphatic epoxy with added hardener, which is poured and troweled into every surface to ensure an even coat.

This layer adheres to the diamond ground surface. The epoxy provides the base color of the customer’s choosing as well as a surface that the final layer can adhere to.

Step 4: Top Layer Texture

The final step in the process is the broadcast layer of grit which adheres to the base layer as it dries. The gritty texture provides improved grip and much improved aesthetics.

Engineered, specially pigmented sand is added to the resin/hardener mix and then broadcast on top to eliminate any glossy areas. The next day our team will return, after the epoxy has had time to set, to sweep and vacuum up any excess sand.

Man broadcasts top layer texture onto resurfaced concrete while other workers finish spreading the base layer.

Step 5: Enjoy

Our concrete resurfacing system is a highly reliable way to repair and resurface concrete damaged from salt, freeze-thaw or excessive wear with a very attractive looking result.

The project area will not be affected by de-icing salts which would damage ordinary concrete. Edges feather out to paper thin, without flaking or peeling back as so many other products do.

Our concrete resurfacing system results in a durable, attractive, easy to maintain concrete surface at a very reasonable cost compared to other resurfacing options.

Applications for Concrete Resurfacing

Driveway

With all of the salt, grit, and grime that follow your cars and trucks everywhere, it’s only a matter of time before you begin to see the surface of your driveway begin to chip, spall, or crumble.

Walkway / Sidewalk

Your walkways and sidewalks handle a lot of foot traffic, which means it is imperative that those surfaces remain safe to travel on. Chipping or crumbling sidewalks can create debris that can be slipped and tripped on. Resurfacing your sidewalk will eliminate this issue, and will improve the overall aesthetic of your concrete.

Patio

Patios see a lot of wear and tear over the years which can cause the concrete surface to chip and spall. Transform your patio from an old concrete slab to a beautiful part of your home by resurfacing it.

Steps / Stairs

Chipping, spalling, or crumbling stairs can be a major slip and trip hazard at your home or business. Resurfacing these concrete areas will give you a “like-new” surface that you can feel confident about.

Concrete Slabs

Any concrete slabs you may have at your home or business that are chipping, spalling, or crumbling are great candidates for resurfacing.

Pool Deck

Pool decks see a lot of water which can seep into the concrete surface and cause it to chip away. No one wants to walk barefoot over a crumbling pool deck, only to track it into the pool itself. Do yourself and your guests a favor and resurface your pool deck to eliminate any of these unnecessary problems.
