Uneven Sidewalk or Walkway Creating a Trip Hazard?

A sunken sidewalk or uneven walkway can make your property feel unsafe fast. One raised edge can catch a foot, create a fall risk, or make it harder for guests, customers, tenants, or family members to walk safely.

If your concrete walkway is sinking, cracking, holding water, or pulling away from nearby steps, your concrete may not need to be replaced.

The Concrete Team provides walkway leveling, sidewalk leveling, mudjacking, slabjacking, and concrete repair services throughout Upstate New York. We can raise and stabilize settled concrete to help restore a safer, smoother walking surface.

Call today for a FREE estimate.

Why Sidewalks and Walkways Sink

Concrete sidewalks and walkways sit on the soil below them. When that soil shifts, settles, erodes, or washes away, the slab can sink or tilt.

Common reasons sidewalks and walkways become uneven include:

  • Poor soil compaction before the concrete was poured
  • Water washing soil away under the slab
  • Freeze-thaw cycles during Upstate New York winters
  • Tree roots pushing or moving nearby concrete
  • Heavy foot traffic over time
  • Poor drainage near the walkway
  • Voids forming under the concrete
  • Soil shrinking, settling, or moving over time

Once the slab loses support, it may drop below the next section and create a trip hazard.

If the concrete has cracks along with settlement, our concrete crack repair service may help after the slab is lifted. If the walkway surface is chipped, crumbling, or spalling, concrete resurfacing may also be worth considering.

I cannot recommend Jim Denney and The Concrete Team highly enough! I’ve known Jim for many years, and as a Realtor, I’ve confidently referred him to my clients and I know he will exceeded expectations. Jim’s knowledge, experience, and workmanship are truly second to none. The quality of his work is exceptional, but what really sets him apart is the way he treats people. Home repairs, especially foundation or concrete issues can be overwhelming and emotional for homeowners. Jim has a remarkable ability to communicate clearly, explain complex issues in a way that’s easy to understand, and put people at ease. He never pressures anyone and always takes the time to help homeowners feel informed and confident about their decisions. Jim and his partner, Mike, are also two of the most honest, ethical people you’ll ever meet. Their integrity is unwavering, and they genuinely care about doing what’s right for their clients, not just getting the job done. In an industry where trust means everything, The Concrete Team stands in a class of its own. I give them my absolute highest recommendation and will continue referring them with complete confidence. They are simply the best.

Three years ago, I contacted The Concrete Team about some settling issues with my stamped concrete pool patio that had created a trip hazard in several high-traffic areas. They came out, evaluated the problem, and provided an estimate, but I never moved forward with the work at that time. After this past winter, the settling became noticeably worse. With a graduation party approaching, I wanted to get the issue fixed before guests arrived and risked tripping or falling. I called The Concrete Team expecting the price to have increased after three years, but to my surprise, they honored the original estimate and were able to fit me into their schedule on short notice. Their crew did an outstanding job. They were professional, efficient, and restored the patio for a fraction of the cost of replacing it. The finished product looks great, and most importantly, the trip hazards are gone. As a real estate agent, I’m always looking for trustworthy contractors to recommend to my clients, and The Concrete Team has absolutely earned my recommendation. If you have settled or uneven concrete, don’t wait—give them a call. You’ll be glad you did.

I had a fantastic experience with the concrete team! They did an amazing job mud jacking my front walkway. The pricing was very reasonable, they showed up on time, and the work was completed quickly and efficiently. The whole process was smooth from start to finish, and the results came out great. Highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality work at a fair price!"

Jim and Mike did an absolutely outstanding job on our front sidewalk and the garage floor entrance. They had to drill holes in our front sidewalk and then pressure install concrete underneath to raise them back up to the correct level. Not an easy task. But this was done exceptionally well. Then they applied an epoxy surfacer to even out all the salt erosion that had been happening. After this a sand surfacing was applied to the epoxy [white] to give the sidewalk the proper appearance - now tan. A truly exceptional job. Pete and Susie, Cohoes, NY

Signs You May Need Walkway or Sidewalk Leveling

Sidewalk problems can start small. A slight height difference may not seem like a big deal at first, but it can become a safety concern as the concrete continues to move.

You may need sidewalk or walkway leveling if you notice:

    • Raised edges between sidewalk slabs
    • A visible trip hazard
    • Cracks near uneven sections
    • Water pooling on or beside the walkway
    • Concrete sloping toward the home, garage, or building
    • Gaps under the edge of the slab
    • Sections that rock or feel unsupported
    • A walkway pulling away from steps, porches, or patios
    • Uneven entry paths near doors
    • Problems with public, commercial, or rental property walkways

If your walkway connects to sinking steps, visit our steps leveling page. If the problem is near a porch or entryway, our porch leveling service may also be helpful.

Our Walkway and Sidewalk Leveling Process

The Concrete Team specializes in mudjacking, also called slabjacking. This allows us to look at your walkway, review the problem,
and recommend the lifting method that makes the most sense for your concrete.

    Our process is simple:

Top Concrete Leveling Contractor Near Me

Step 1: Inspect the Uneven Concrete

We review the settled sidewalk or walkway, check the height difference, look for cracks, and identify areas where the slab may have lost support.

Step 2: Lift and Stabilize the Slab

We use mudjacking, also called slabjacking, to raise and support settled concrete. This process uses a grout-like material that is pumped beneath the slab to fill voids, stabilize the concrete, and lift it back toward the surrounding surface.

Step 3: Patch the Holes and Clean Up

After the concrete is raised, the injection holes are patched and the work area is cleaned up. We can also explain whether crack repair, joint sealing, or drainage improvements may help protect the repair.

You can learn more about how this works on our concrete leveling process page.

    Walkway & Sidewalk Leveling FAQs

Can an uneven sidewalk be lifted instead of replaced?

Yes, many uneven sidewalks can be lifted if the concrete is still in good condition. If the slab is badly broken, crumbling, or severely damaged, replacement may be the better option. You can learn more about the cause of settlement on our Why Concrete Sinks page.

Yes. One of the main reasons people level sidewalks is to reduce trip hazards caused by uneven slabs. Raising the settled slab can help create a smoother and safer walking surface.
Sidewalk lifting can raise and stabilize the slab, but it does not make cracks disappear. If cracks remain after the lift, concrete crack repair or joint sealing may be recommended. Learn more about concrete crack repair and joint sealing / caulking.
Many sidewalk and walkway leveling projects can be completed faster than full concrete replacement. The exact time depends on how many slabs need to be lifted, how far they have settled, and which lifting method is used.
