Bowed Wall Stabilization Albany NY

Why Basement Walls Bow, Tip, or Shear

Foundation walls usually move because of pressure from outside the home. Soil can press against the wall, especially when it gets heavy with water from rain, melting snow, poor drainage, or freeze-thaw cycles.

Common causes include:

  • Soil pressure against the foundation wall
  • Water buildup around the foundation
  • Melting snow and heavy rain
  • Freeze-thaw cycles during Upstate New York winters
  • Tree roots near the foundation
  • Construction or grade changes outside the wall
  • Older block, stone, or poured concrete walls
  • Poor drainage near the home

Block walls often show horizontal cracks, stair-step cracks, bowing in the middle of the wall, or bottom shearing. Poured concrete walls may show horizontal cracks, angled cracks, leaning, or tipping near the top of the wall.

If your wall also has leaking cracks, visit our foundation waterproofing or foundation crack repair page. If you are seeing cracks in driveways, sidewalks, patios, or other flatwork, our concrete crack repair service may also help.

I cannot recommend Jim Denney and The Concrete Team highly enough! I’ve known Jim for many years, and as a Realtor, I’ve confidently referred him to my clients and I know he will exceeded expectations. Jim’s knowledge, experience, and workmanship are truly second to none. The quality of his work is exceptional, but what really sets him apart is the way he treats people. Home repairs, especially foundation or concrete issues can be overwhelming and emotional for homeowners. Jim has a remarkable ability to communicate clearly, explain complex issues in a way that’s easy to understand, and put people at ease. He never pressures anyone and always takes the time to help homeowners feel informed and confident about their decisions. Jim and his partner, Mike, are also two of the most honest, ethical people you’ll ever meet. Their integrity is unwavering, and they genuinely care about doing what’s right for their clients, not just getting the job done. In an industry where trust means everything, The Concrete Team stands in a class of its own. I give them my absolute highest recommendation and will continue referring them with complete confidence. They are simply the best.

Three years ago, I contacted The Concrete Team about some settling issues with my stamped concrete pool patio that had created a trip hazard in several high-traffic areas. They came out, evaluated the problem, and provided an estimate, but I never moved forward with the work at that time. After this past winter, the settling became noticeably worse. With a graduation party approaching, I wanted to get the issue fixed before guests arrived and risked tripping or falling. I called The Concrete Team expecting the price to have increased after three years, but to my surprise, they honored the original estimate and were able to fit me into their schedule on short notice. Their crew did an outstanding job. They were professional, efficient, and restored the patio for a fraction of the cost of replacing it. The finished product looks great, and most importantly, the trip hazards are gone. As a real estate agent, I’m always looking for trustworthy contractors to recommend to my clients, and The Concrete Team has absolutely earned my recommendation. If you have settled or uneven concrete, don’t wait—give them a call. You’ll be glad you did.

I had a fantastic experience with the concrete team! They did an amazing job mud jacking my front walkway. The pricing was very reasonable, they showed up on time, and the work was completed quickly and efficiently. The whole process was smooth from start to finish, and the results came out great. Highly recommend them to anyone looking for quality work at a fair price!"

Jim and Mike did an absolutely outstanding job on our front sidewalk and the garage floor entrance. They had to drill holes in our front sidewalk and then pressure install concrete underneath to raise them back up to the correct level. Not an easy task. But this was done exceptionally well. Then they applied an epoxy surfacer to even out all the salt erosion that had been happening. After this a sand surfacing was applied to the epoxy [white] to give the sidewalk the proper appearance - now tan. A truly exceptional job. Pete and Susie, Cohoes, NY

Signs You May Need Bowed Wall Stabilization

Wall movement often starts small. A crack may not seem like a big deal at first, but it can be a warning sign that the wall is under pressure.

You may need bowed wall stabilization if you notice:

    • A basement wall bowing inward
    • Horizontal cracks in block or poured concrete
    • Stair-step cracks in block walls
    • Angled cracks in poured concrete walls
    • Leaning or tipping at the top of the wall
    • Shearing near the bottom of the wall
    • Gaps between blocks or mortar joints
    • A wall that looks pushed in from the outside
    • Cracks that are getting wider or longer
    • Water coming through wall cracks

A bowed wall should be checked before the movement gets worse. In some cases, one major rain event can add enough pressure to make an already weak wall much harder to repair.

    Our Bowed Wall Stabilization Process

The Concrete Team starts with a clear inspection.
We look at the wall, the crack pattern, the amount of movement, and any signs of water or outside pressure.

    Step 1: Inspect the Wall

We check the basement wall for bowing, shearing, tipping, cracks, moisture, and signs of movement. This helps us understand what is happening and what repair may make sense.

Step 2: Prepare the Wall for Reinforcement

The wall surface is prepared so the reinforcement system can bond correctly. Proper prep matters because wall stabilization depends on a strong connection between the wall and the repair system.

Step 3: Install the Stabilization System

The wall is reinforced to help stop further movement and add strength. If an InvisiBeam® system is used, the carbon fiber / Kevlar® strap, top anchor, and bottom anchor work together to help resist lateral wall pressure. The PDF explains that the top anchor connects to the home’s framing system when accessible, while the bottom anchor helps resist bottom wall shear.

    A Low-Profile Wall Stabilization System

The Fortress InvisiBeam® system is designed to reinforce foundation walls affected by bowing, shearing, and tipping. It uses composite materials and structural anchoring to help support the wall against outside soil pressure.

Unlike some wall reinforcement options, the InvisiBeam® system is anchored at the top and bottom of the wall. This helps address more than one type of wall movement. The PDF also notes that the system installs quickly and with less mess than many other wall reinforcement options.

Because the system is low-profile, it can often be painted or hidden behind a finished wall after installation, depending on the basement layout and repair plan.

    Bowed Wall Stabilization FAQs

Is a bowed basement wall serious?

Yes. A bowed basement wall can mean the wall is under too much pressure from the soil outside. The wall may continue to move if it is not repaired. If you see bowing, horizontal cracks, stair-step cracks, or tipping, contact The Concrete Team for an inspection.

Bowing usually means the middle of the wall is pushing inward. Shearing often happens near the bottom of the wall when part of the wall shifts. Tipping means the top of the wall is leaning inward. These are all signs of wall movement and should be checked.

In many cases, yes. If the wall is still repairable, stabilization may help strengthen it and reduce the need for full wall replacement. The right repair depends on the amount of movement, wall type, cracks, and overall condition.

Horizontal cracks often form when outside soil pressure pushes against the wall. Water, frost, poor drainage, and expanding soil can all add pressure. If the crack is leaking, you may also need foundation waterproofing or foundation crack repair.

InvisiBeam® is a wall reinforcement system that uses composite materials and structural anchoring to help stabilize foundation walls. If The Concrete Team is confirmed as an approved installer, this can be used as a stronger product-focused section on the page.

In many cases, yes. Low-profile wall stabilization systems may be easier to paint over or frame around than bulky steel beams. The best answer depends on the wall, the system installed, and your basement plan.

Wall stabilization is mainly used to strengthen and support the wall. If water is coming through cracks or gaps, waterproofing or crack repair may also be needed. Visit our foundation waterproofing page to learn more.
